Deion Sanders urges Jerry Jones to bring back Dez Bryant

Deion Sanders has known Dez Bryant since long before the Cowboys drafted him. In college, Bryant was busted for lying to an NCAA investigator about visiting Sanders’ home. Now, with Bryant’s career at a crossroads, Sanders thinks it’s time for the Cowboys to give him another chance.

Although Sanders still has a high opinion of Bryant, it doesn’t appear that many NFL teams do, or else Bryant wouldn’t still be looking for a contract. It may be a while before Bryant finds a team — and, despite what Sanders proposes, that team is not going to be the Cowboys.

The Raiders added safety Marcus Gilchrist and cornerbacks Melvin and Daryl Worley among others. They see the return of cornerback Gareon Conley, who missed 14 games with a shin injury, and safety Obi Melifonwu, who played only five games as a rookie because of ankle and hip injuries.

For sure, Armstead said, via Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area. I’ve been hurt two years in a row, so that brings a lot of, ‘What are you going to do?’ So definitely [I] have a lot to prove and look forward to having a healthy season, and I know what I’m capable of if I’m on the field.

Armstead ended the past two seasons on injured reserve, needing shoulder and hand surgeries. As a rookie in 2015, he played 16 games but started only one after the 49ers made him a first-round pick.

Of course, there are critics, Armstead said. Of course, fans want players to be out there and not be hurt, but part of football is being injured. I can’t control that. All I can control is, if I do get hurt, I try to rehab and get back healthy and play to the best of my ability.

Armstead will line up at the big end spot after formerly playing on the other side as the pass-rushing Leo. He will play defensive end in the base defense and move to defensive tackle in the team’s substitution packages.

Trump blasts NFL and teases patriotic event replacing Eagles reception

Trump blasts NFL and teases patriotic event replacing Eagles reception More Donald Trump blasted the National Football League and the Philadelphia Eagles on Tuesday, mocking the league for its new National Anthem policy and criticizing the Super Bowl winners for refusing to visit the White House like other championship teams.

It’s a Sunday, so all 30 clubs are scheduled to play. The best game of the day on paper is the Los Angeles Angels playing the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium. Others involving two potential contenders are the Colorado Rockies at Seattle Mariners, St. Louis Cardinals at San Francisco Giants, Atlanta Braves at Milwaukee Brewers and Philadelphia Phillies at Pittsburgh Pirates.

Robertson figures it’ll be at least a few days before the issue gets resolved one way or the other because Monday was the first day of the draft, which runs through Wednesday.

I know obviously (commissioner) Rob Manfred has a lot on the plate with the draft going on and a lot of things are happening, Robertson said. There’s a lot of time between now and (July 8).

Obviously once the draft clears over and is finished, there will be some discussions made from people above me and hopefully this whole doubleheader and night-game getaway into it gets smoothed over and another situation is found. I know there are other alternatives out there, other games that could be played.

The Philadelphia Eagles are unable to come to the White House with their full team to be celebrated tomorrow,Trump said in a statement. They disagree with their President because he insists that they proudly stand for the National Anthem, hand on heart, in honor of the great men and women of our military and the people of our country.

Trump — who has previously flubbed the words to the anthem and needed to be reminded by the First Lady to put his hand over his heart — has followed this playbook before. A year ago, he uninvited Stephen Curry of the NBA-champion Golden State Warriors after Curry already said he wouldn’t attend. The rest of the Warriors opted not to make the trip either.

While quarterbacks Carson Wentz and Nick Foles each said that they planned to join players in attending the White House, some prominent players — Malcolm Jenkins, Chris Long, and Torrey Smith — all publicly said that they’d skip the event.

Titans’ Delanie Walker: ‘I feel like I’m the best tight end in the league’

eagles_099Delanie Walker thinks he’s the best player in the NFL at his position.

The 33-year old Titans tight end caught 74 passes for 807 yards and three touchdowns in 2017. He said this week he believes he’s the most productive tight end in all of football.

Honestly, I feel like I’m the best tight end in the league in all phases, Walker said this week (via the Tennessean). Blocking, run blocking, catching the ball, breaking tackles, stuff like that. At the end of the day, if you don’t feel like that you shouldn’t be in the league.

Manager Alex Cora said Betts would take some swings Saturday and see how he’s feeling, then the club will decide when it’s time to activate him. The Red Sox were missing Betts, who is hitting .359 with 17 home runs and 37 RBI, as well as designated hitter J.D. Martinez (.314, 20 home runs, 52 RBI) while getting shut out for the second time this season.

White Sox: OF Adam Engel (hamstring) was out of lineup for the second straight day. … RF Avisail Garcia (hamstring) will begin a rehab assignment next week with Triple-A Charlotte.

Red Sox: Martinez was out of the lineup after getting pulled after the seventh inning Thursday because of back tightness. Cora said Martinez was getting a night off after a busy stretch in the schedule. … Optioned LHP Jalen Beeks, who made his major-league debut Thursday in a loss to Detroit, to Triple-A Pawtucket and recalled RHP Justin Haley.

Report: Julian Edelman tested positive for unrecognizable substance

eagles_100Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman has acknowledged he is facing a four-game suspension under the NFL’s policy on performance-enhancing substances, but he also said he doesn’t know what happened. It appears the league’s drug testing experts aren’t completely sure what happened either.

According to Albert Breer of, Edelman’s result was triggered by a substance that wasn’t immediately recognizable, and the drug testers are still analyzing it.

Trailing 2-1 most of the night, the Cubs scored six times over the last four innings against the Brewers’ formidable bullpen. They won their seventh straight over Milwaukee.

It would be nice to get (the offense) rolling, whether it’s earlier in the game with runners in scoring position … take some heat off the bullpen and not have to play extra innings, Maddon said.

Cubs relievers tossed five scoreless innings, with Randy Rosario (3-0) retiring all six batters he faced for the win.

They do all the little things well. They don’t make mistakes, Brewers outfielder Ryan Braun said. We still have to get better at some of those things I think to consistently play as good of baseball as they do.

Lawson seems to be getting the message about doing things differently after missing 11 regular season games and last year’s playoff loss because of injury. His comments about his job being on the line came while he was also discussing offseason weight loss designed to keep him on the field in what’s shaping up as a crucial season in his young career.

Mize walked three batters twice as a freshman in 2016 but hadn’t walked more than two batters in 31 starts until Saturday. He said he didn’t know why his control was off against the Gators, who are now one victory away from their fourth consecutive trip to the College World Series.

If I could put my finger on it, I probably would have figured it out, he said. But I don’t know. I just kept walking guys. I kept getting behind the count, so I don’t know. We’ll go back and watch some video. I’ll try to figure it out, but midgame there wasn’t anything that I noticed, or else I would have figured it out and changed it.

Steelers receiver Antonio Brown went public with his strong feelings about the edict.

eagles_101Players do have some support on this issue from their teams. Coaches, in particular, despise the new rule. Several assistants said the mandate potentially could create massive locker room issues that coaches will have to calm.

When kneeling, players were on the field with teammates. Some coaches fear that if protesting players stay in the locker room while others are on the field, it would lead to more of a divide.

The anthem policy will (supposedly) be implemented team-to-team. If one team has a draconian anthem policy and another team does not, does that become a factor for a free agent to weigh if the offers are relatively equal?

Randall said Wednesday he never imagined that an innocent Twitter posting about the NBA Finals would blow up into a national story — and maybe something he lives to regret.

A big fan of Golden State star guard Stephen Curry, Randall posted a tweet on Monday night promising that if the Cleveland Cavaliers beat the Warriors in the 2018 NBA finals, I’ll buy everyone who retweet’s this a jersey.

By Wednesday afternoon, Randall’s tweet had been retweeted 869,000 times.

Honestly, I didn’t think it was going to get over 100, Randall said after practice. I didn’t think people were going to actually view that as a serious tweet from me. But obviously it got the whole world excited about it, and I mean now I’m actually excited about it. It is a great, great opportunity to interact with the fans and we’re just going to watch the series and just see how everything folds out.

Reuben Foster’s accuser offers explosive testimony, says she lied about everything

Three months after being involved in an incident that led to three felony charges, the case against 49ers linebacker Reuben Foster took a dramatic turn on Thursday after Foster’s ex-girlfriend, Elissa Ennis, took the stand during a preliminary hearing. During her testimony, Ennis recanted her initial allegations. After Foster was arrested on Feb. 11 , Ennis had told police  that Foster dragged her by her hair, physically threw her out of the house, and punched her in the head eight to 10 times.

Although Ennis’ lawyer had advised her not to take the stand, the ex-girlfriend decided to testify anyway, because she wanted to apologize to Foster. “I’m sorry,” Ennis said. “I really am. I apologize to everybody. I really am sorry.”

The Bills had to prepare the quarterback position in case they missed on an early prospect. Signal-caller AJ McCarron won a grievance case against the Cincinnati Bengals, which granted him free-agent status. Buffalo signed the fifth-year pro to a modest two-year, $10 million deal.

However, the Bills made two moves to acquire quarterback Josh Allen. Buffalo acquired the No. 12 pick from the Bengals then jumped to No. 7 in place of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers during the draft.

Allen will have a fair opportunity to start over McCarron, who doesn’t have a major advantage in playing experience. He’s started three games since his 2014 entry and threw 14 passes over the past two seasons.

The Bills tossed Nathan Peterman to the wolves as a starter last year against the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 11, and we saw how that turned out five interceptions later. Buffalo must fully prepare their rookie signal-caller before turning the offense over to him. Expect McCarron to start with the door open for Allen if the 2018 season goes off the rails. bucks_431

Kevin Colbert ranks as No. 2 general manager in the NFL

Kevin Colbert ranks as No. 2 general manager in the NFL More There might not be a job on an NFL team more important than that of the general manager. All personnel decisions run through them including draft picks and free agents. And the Pittsburgh Steelers have a very good one in Kevin Colbert. In fact, according to the folks at Rotoworld, Colbert is second only to Bill Belichick in their rankings. Colbert is an elite general manager.

In my 11 years as a head coach, I probably haven’t talked about road and home five times with our team, he said. “It’s about how you play between the lines. Because I think if you start talking about that, then you find excuses in both places. We can’t play like we played tonight no matter where we played. If we would have played in Boston like that, we would have gotten beat.”

Justify (2-5) won, with hard-charging Bravazo (15-1) second and Tenfold (25-1) third. Good Magic (7-2) fell to fourth after a valiant run.

They put it to us, said Justify trainer Bob Baffert. “They had their own private match race and somebody had to give. I’m just glad it wasn’t us.”

In a Triple Crown races that reminded some of Affirmed and Alydar. In 1978, Alydar finished second to Affirmed in all three Triple Crown races.

I’m worried about the gate, Baffert said minutes before the race. “I hope he can get away clean and then let him run his race.”

And that’s what happened as he battled Good Magic for three-quarters of a mile before putting the race away — barely.

Barring multiple injuries, there’s no room for Hughes to make a significant impact as a rookie. The Vikings have quality and depth at cornerback, but they play in a division with quarterback Aaron Rodgers. It’s smart to keep a spare high-potential cover defender on the roster.

Expect Hughes to battle Mackensie for the No. 3 spot next year, assuming Newman finally retires. cowboys_065

Chargers sign Nelson Spruce

The Chargers made an addition to their wide receiver group on Monday.

The team announced that they have signed Nelson Spruce to their 90-man roster. Spruce worked out for the team earlier in the day.

Spruce’s signing brings him back to Los Angeles, although not with the team he played for during his first stint in the city. Spruce signed with the Rams as an undrafted free agent in 2016 and spent time on the active roster without getting into any games. He was waived last September and spent time on the Bears practice squad and the Chiefs offseason roster before landing with the Chargers.

Jason Pierre-Paul’s Fourth of July celebration in 2015 took a turn for the worst when a fireworks accident led to the defensive end having his finger amputated. He also suffered a broken thumb.

The loss of his right index finger was not career-ending. But the accident was a good reminder of the dangers of the holiday, which comes during NFL players’ free time between minicamp and training camp.

There’s an annual tradition in the Stanley Cup playoffs in which the last remaining Canadian franchise, attempting to bring the chalice north-of-da-border for the first time since 1993, is anointed “Canada’s team” by the barometer of public sentiment: the newspaper editorial page. “The Winnipeg Jets are the perfect team for all Canadians to root for, and we should do so with abandon”! wrote the Globe & Mail. (The exclamation point was mine.)

Then there’s another annual tradition in the Stanley Cup playoffs, in which legions of Canadians declare that the concept of “Canada’s team” is absurd, because the country is split up into warring factions of die-hard fans who view anyone else winning the chalice as “not us.” Please note this is especially true for those fans that inhabit the Centre of the Hockey Universe.

Here’s the thing: The Winnipeg Jets are not Canada’s team, despite being anointed as such by members of Parliament, and I wish the U.S. Congress had that kind of time on their hands. They’re a team that plays in Canada, and they have some Canadian virtue, but they’re not Canada’s team.ravens_179

Newton led the team in rushing last season with 754 yards.

With the 5-foot-8, 224-pound Anderson, the Panthers have a powerfully-built running back who posted 3,051 yards rushing and 20 touchdowns on 693 carries, averaging 4.4 yards per attempt, over the past five seasons with the Broncos.

While Anderson joins second-year pro Christian McCaffrey in the backfield, it remains to be seen how new offensive coordinator Norv Turner intends to split touches.

He had chances to, given that 2013 first-rounder Matt Elam turned out a bust.

Crockett Gillmore has teased at times, but there’s a reason the Ravens drafted a second-round tight end one year later (Maxx Williams) and, in 2018, took first- and third-round tight ends (Hayden Hurst and Mark Andrews).

Lorenzo Taliaferro and John Urschel had their moments and looked like value picks, but Taliaferro washed out of the league prior to the ’17 season, while Urschel retired to protect his health and study math at MIT.

Overall, this draft had a lot of good results, but those results were short-lived and never bore fruit at the same time.

“[White’s] got some serious arm talent,” Jones said, via the Dallas Morning News. “As I said, we’ve got a young quarterback coach in Kellen Moore. That quarterback room may be as young as any in the league. That is the direction we want to go. I don’t see us adding a veteran type quarterback. We’re going to let Cooper [Rush] and Mike really compete there, and push Dak in terms of getting his competitive juices flowing.

“I’m thrilled with that group of guys and look forward to seeing it play out. He’s got some sneaky mobility on top of the fact. He’s very accurate and certainly a competitor. It’ll be a fun room to watch evolve over time.”

Of course, a declaration to go young is handy, in case anyone asks why they haven’t signed some particular veteran quarterback. But unless a veteran can replicate Prescott’s skill set and run the same offense, there’s not much practical use for having an old guy for the sake of an old guy.broncos_004_3dfdf814f2e037c7-180x180

Cowboys trade Ryan Switzer to Raiders for Jihad Ward

The Cowboys and Raiders hooked up for a trade before the draft came to an end on Saturday.

Dallas announced they will send wide receiver Ryan Switzer to Oakland in exchange for defensive tackle Jihad Ward.

I think that having someone with a lot of their own personal experiences can help me and younger guys in our locker room get our technique down, and a lot of questions (Fraley) will be able to answer, Lions lineman Graham Glasgow said Tuesday.

And I think that he, especially for the centers and the interior lineman, is a very good resource to make sure we can be the best we can be.

The coaching tandem will be tasked with improving the line’s toughness — particularly in short-yardage situations — which was recently criticized by general manager Bob Quinn.

ESPN reports that Witten has agreed to become an analyst on Monday Night Football. ESPN previously reported that Witten was likely to make the move but hadn’t officially decided. Now it appears to be official.

Witten, who will turn 36 on Sunday, is still a good enough player that the Cowboys were hoping to keep him. But his production declined last year, and his 63 catches for 560 yards were his lowest totals since he became the Cowboys’ starting tight end in 2004.

It’s the second straight season that a Cowboys player has retired and gone into the broadcast booth. Last year, Witten’s friend and longtime teammate Tony Romo retired after the Cowboys released him and took a job with CBS, where he got rave reviews as an analyst. ESPN can only hope Witten is as successful — and the Cowboys can only hope to identify a young tight end who replaces Witten as well as Dak Prescott has replaced Romo.

It came down to the last score, Shurmur said.broncos_095_3aa1363d05d5ee2f-180x180
