Uber driver’s lawyer says Ronald Darby no longer recalled ride in question

It turns out Eagles cornerback Ronald Darby was an unreliable witness because he wasn’t there when his former Florida State teammate, Jameis Winston, groped an Uber driver in March 2016.

The attorney for the former Uber driver confirmed a report from last week that Darby had not stayed with Winston the entire night in question.

The third man who spent time with Winston and Darby that night reportedly was Brandon Banks, a former Vanderbilt football player now in prison for rape.

There are a lot of reasons for that, starting with the basic facts of the Buccaneers’ schedule: The Bucs play on Monday night in Week Three, which means that after Winston starts his suspension at the conclusion of the preseason, he can’t return to the team until Tuesday, September 25. So the Bucs will be on a short work week heading into their Week Four game at Chicago on Sunday, September 30. Would the Bucs want to throw Winston in on a short work week, after three weeks off?

After that game against the Bears, the Buccaneers are on their bye week. So it might make more sense for them to play Fitzpatrick in Week Four, then give Winston time to get ready during the Week Five bye before he returns to the starting lineup in Week Six.

Of course, that assumes that Winston is going to return to the starting lineup at all. What if Fitzpatrick plays well and has the Buccaneers’ offense humming? Would the Bucs stick with the hot hand?

Yankees not ruling out Clint Frazier forcing them to keep him on roster

Clint Frazier arrived at Yankee Stadium for Thursday’s game telling himself the same thing as the day before… and so on:

Do something to stand out.

Brady doesn’t know how 2018 will play out and he doesn’t know how he’ll feel after. We could very well be reading Brady Instagram comments for another five offseasons. Welcome to June.

Not existentially, or wondering why his GPS seems broken, but as a person?

This just doesn’t seem like the same Goodell, who was selected in August 2006 to succeed Paul Tagliabue.

The Goodell I knew when he first took over would not have disappeared in the wake of Trump’s attacks on the league. He would have told the president to go kick rocks. If any owner tried to stop him from fighting back, he would have told that owner to kick rocks, too.

Now? Goodell is hiding.

It’s not really smart to suggest that anyone other than Brady himself knows when he’s going to walk away, and it’s not really smart to suggest Brady even knows right now what he wants to do following this year. The year to year idea floated by lots of older quarterbacks can sound a little absurd at times, but ultimately it makes sense in this context.

He used to be feared and unintimidated by anyone or any situation. He was tough, a bulldog.

In 2007, he suspended Wade Wilson, then the quarterbacks coach of the Cowboys, for five games and fined him $100,000 for purchasing human growth hormone, which Wilson said was for diabetes. He hit players like Ben Roethlisberger and Pacman Jones hard with suspensions. He policed on-field conduct more than previous NFL commissioners. He took a first-round pick from the Patriots for Spygate.

Leading off and playing center for the first time as a big leaguer, Frazier started the Yankees’ first off with an opposite-field single and it led to a four-run inning that was the difference in the game.

MLB trade rumors: Rays’ Blake Snell for Yankees’ Justus Sheffield, Clint Frazier?

Summer officially starts on Thursday. But trade season is well underway in MLB, with the non-waiver deadline approaching next month.

It’s no secret Yankees GM Brian Cashman is looking for a starter. Jordan Montgomery is out for the year because of Tommy John surgery and Masahiro Tanaka is on the DL with a pair of strained hamstrings.

I think Snell would be the best fit for the Yankees and an ideal No. 2 starter behind Severino. The Yankees would control Snell through 2022 and in time he should develop into a Cy Young Award candidate. He’s considered the fourth-best left-handed starting pitcher in the league behind Chris Sale and David Price of the archrival Sox and James Paxton of the Mariners. Snell, 25, is 8-4 with a 2.58 ERA and 97 punchouts in only 87.1 innings.

In return, the Yankees would have to overpay with top pitching prospects Sheffield and Swanson, who would go right into the Rays’ starting rotation, and Frazier, who would immediately become their starting left fielder with the talent to produce 20 home runs, 20 stolen bases and above-average defense. High price to pay, but it would be worth it if it pushes the Yankees to another title.

In an Instagram video posted Monday, Owens showed off his speed with two different stopwatch operators clocking him covering 40 yards in 4.43 and 4.44 seconds.

This comes roughly a month after he posted video of himself working out and showing off his chiseled physique in Los Angeles, while calling on current NFL stars Odell Beckham and Dez Bryant to join him.

Then just a few days after that tweet, he announced a comeback — in virtual form — as the cover subject for the video game Madden NFL 19 Hall of Fame edition.

We’ve come to expect this kind of grandstanding from someone who’s already announced that he won’t be present at his own Hall of Fame induction ceremony in August.

Still, with his latest video submission, no one can say he’s lost his ability to hustle.

Shohei Ohtani injury update: Angels pitcher placed on DL with UCL sprain

Shohei Ohtani will be placed on the disabled list with a grade 2 sprain of his right (pitching) ulnar collateral ligament, the Angels announced Friday.

He underwent a platelet-rich plasma and stem cell injection as a form of treatment Thursday and will be re-evaluated in three weeks, according to the team.

Ohtani, 23, was removed from his most recent mound start with what manager Mike Scioscia described afterward as a blister problem, however Friday’s news appears far worse for the double-threat rookie sensation.

However, a fellow Japanese pitcher, Yankees starter Masahiro Tanaka, has dealt with a similar injury and has been pitching with it for several years now, so it’s possible Ohtani could work his way back without major reconstructive surgery.

The team will also monitor his practice reps to get him ready for the regular season, which kicks off Sept. 9 against the Bengals.

Luck was seen throwing for the first time in months last Tuesday as the Colts began mandatory minicamp. He missed all of last season after undergoing shoulder surgery to repair a torn labrum in January 2017. Reports initially suggested he would be ready for the 2017 opener, but his return was pushed back after he suffered a setback in practice and he was shut down for the season on Nov. 2.

Given Luck’s history, it’s clear why the Colts are exercising caution.

Curry, after he was relayed James’ thoughts, said, I agree with ‘Bron.

A former Ohio State and Chicago Bears offensive lineman has been charged with felony assault of a police officer.

Charges against 33-year-old Kirk Barton were filed after his arrest outside the Bogey Bar & Grill in Dublin, Ohio.

Eagles making changes in medical staff

The Eagles just handed out Super Bowl rings, and they’ve made some changes involving long-time staffers.

I think you get into that tendency where everyone is looking for that 18- to 19-year-old kid that can be the next Giannis [Antetokounmpo], instead of maybe taking the next — and I’m not saying Mikal Bridges is Draymond Green — where you’re taking a player that has been in school, is maybe a little bit older where maybe the upside is not there, Marks said. I think that’s where you get in trouble a lot, when you start looking at an age. Maybe an older player that you bypassed based on ‘you know what he is’ instead of a Kevin Knox that maybe you think you do, but are projecting out.

Knox said after a recent interview he feels he’s what the NBA wants — a long guy who can really handle the ball and shoot the ball and make multiple decisions.

Michael Porter Jr., doing a series of interviews to promote his new sponsorship deal, hinted on SiriusXM Radio he’s got a near guarantee from a club selecting high. If true, the Knicks could be out of the running. There’s some teams out there that really like me that are high up there, Porter Jr. said.

Winslow was arrested for burglary at a trailer park last week as well. Winslow’s lawyer and agent strongly disputed the charge with his agent saying that he was house-hunting for his mother-in-law. He was scheduled for arraignment on that charge on Thursday before the second arrest.

Wilkins also claims she worked hours — many of them in AT&T Stadium, team owner Jerry Jones’ $1.2 billion football temple — for which she wasn’t compensated, and that she wasn’t paid overtime for hours worked in excess of 40 per week.

She’s not the only ex-cheerleader on a crusade for change. Earlier this month, five former Houston Texans cheerleaders sued that team for failing to compensate them fully and for creating a hostile work environment. Former cheerleaders on the Washington Redskins, Miami Dolphins and New Orleans Saints have also filed similar complaints.

But this is the first time the behemoth that is the Dallas Cowboys, beloved as America’s Team, has entered the conversation. The organization’s cheerleaders make up what is easily the most legendary and high-profile squad in the NFL, and certainly the only one to have had two TV movies made about them (in 1979 and 1980) and to have had their uniform — that iconic blue-and-white vest and shorts look — added into the Smithsonian’s collection.

Yankees’ Brian Cashman explains why he won’t trade Gleyber Torres

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman is hanging out, minding his own business, enjoying New York City. Maybe he’s with friends. Or maybe he’s taking a quiet stroll at night.

Cashman, you’re the worst! someone says. Then a man walks past Cashman. We hate you! he says. A baby shoots Cashman a death stare from her stroller.

Fortunately, that’s an alternate universe in which the 50-year-old will never have to live.

That’s because on Friday, before a game against the Rays at Yankee Stadium, he told reporters that there’s zero chance he’d consider trading rookie sensation and fan favorite Gleyber Torres.

C’mon now, he said. I have to walk around this city.

Sevy and (Sanchez) are like brothers, Boone said. I didn’t hear the banter, but they were kind of going back and forth when they got back in the dugout.

But I don’t think there was much to (the play) other than if you watch Sevy’s reaction… At least it looked like to me like he saw Gary kind of struggle finding it and then he went in go-catch-it mode, which I thought was a smart thing to do.

Gardner had been in the midst of a mini slump after a hot May. He has just three hits in his 20 at-bats over his last six games (.150 batting average).

In May, Gardner hit.313 with three homers and 11 RBI and a.917 OPS. Overall, he’s hitting.258 with five bombs, 21 RBI and a.734 OPS in 59 games. Giancarlo Stanton started in left field Sunday. Aaron Hicks slid into Gardner’s leadoff slot.

Recently, Gardner, who is in the final guaranteed year of his contract, said he would like to play another two or three years

So far, this year’s gone well for me, Gardner said. I’ve stayed healthy and that’s just the name of the game. As long as I can stay healthy and feel like I can still compete and help the team, I want to continue to play. I don’t really put a whole lot of thought into it. Just try and keep focusing on the now and keep preparing for the future. I don’t really put a whole lot of thought into it, but I’d be lying if I hadn’t thought about it.

Deion Sanders urges Jerry Jones to bring back Dez Bryant

Deion Sanders has known Dez Bryant since long before the Cowboys drafted him. In college, Bryant was busted for lying to an NCAA investigator about visiting Sanders’ home. Now, with Bryant’s career at a crossroads, Sanders thinks it’s time for the Cowboys to give him another chance.

Although Sanders still has a high opinion of Bryant, it doesn’t appear that many NFL teams do, or else Bryant wouldn’t still be looking for a contract. It may be a while before Bryant finds a team — and, despite what Sanders proposes, that team is not going to be the Cowboys.

The Raiders added safety Marcus Gilchrist and cornerbacks Melvin and Daryl Worley among others. They see the return of cornerback Gareon Conley, who missed 14 games with a shin injury, and safety Obi Melifonwu, who played only five games as a rookie because of ankle and hip injuries.

For sure, Armstead said, via Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area. I’ve been hurt two years in a row, so that brings a lot of, ‘What are you going to do?’ So definitely [I] have a lot to prove and look forward to having a healthy season, and I know what I’m capable of if I’m on the field.

Armstead ended the past two seasons on injured reserve, needing shoulder and hand surgeries. As a rookie in 2015, he played 16 games but started only one after the 49ers made him a first-round pick.

Of course, there are critics, Armstead said. Of course, fans want players to be out there and not be hurt, but part of football is being injured. I can’t control that. All I can control is, if I do get hurt, I try to rehab and get back healthy and play to the best of my ability.

Armstead will line up at the big end spot after formerly playing on the other side as the pass-rushing Leo. He will play defensive end in the base defense and move to defensive tackle in the team’s substitution packages.

Trump blasts NFL and teases patriotic event replacing Eagles reception

Trump blasts NFL and teases patriotic event replacing Eagles reception More Donald Trump blasted the National Football League and the Philadelphia Eagles on Tuesday, mocking the league for its new National Anthem policy and criticizing the Super Bowl winners for refusing to visit the White House like other championship teams.

It’s a Sunday, so all 30 clubs are scheduled to play. The best game of the day on paper is the Los Angeles Angels playing the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium. Others involving two potential contenders are the Colorado Rockies at Seattle Mariners, St. Louis Cardinals at San Francisco Giants, Atlanta Braves at Milwaukee Brewers and Philadelphia Phillies at Pittsburgh Pirates.

Robertson figures it’ll be at least a few days before the issue gets resolved one way or the other because Monday was the first day of the draft, which runs through Wednesday.

I know obviously (commissioner) Rob Manfred has a lot on the plate with the draft going on and a lot of things are happening, Robertson said. There’s a lot of time between now and (July 8).

Obviously once the draft clears over and is finished, there will be some discussions made from people above me and hopefully this whole doubleheader and night-game getaway into it gets smoothed over and another situation is found. I know there are other alternatives out there, other games that could be played.

The Philadelphia Eagles are unable to come to the White House with their full team to be celebrated tomorrow,Trump said in a statement. They disagree with their President because he insists that they proudly stand for the National Anthem, hand on heart, in honor of the great men and women of our military and the people of our country.

Trump — who has previously flubbed the words to the anthem and needed to be reminded by the First Lady to put his hand over his heart — has followed this playbook before. A year ago, he uninvited Stephen Curry of the NBA-champion Golden State Warriors after Curry already said he wouldn’t attend. The rest of the Warriors opted not to make the trip either.

While quarterbacks Carson Wentz and Nick Foles each said that they planned to join players in attending the White House, some prominent players — Malcolm Jenkins, Chris Long, and Torrey Smith — all publicly said that they’d skip the event.

Titans’ Delanie Walker: ‘I feel like I’m the best tight end in the league’

eagles_099Delanie Walker thinks he’s the best player in the NFL at his position.

The 33-year old Titans tight end caught 74 passes for 807 yards and three touchdowns in 2017. He said this week he believes he’s the most productive tight end in all of football.

Honestly, I feel like I’m the best tight end in the league in all phases, Walker said this week (via the Tennessean). Blocking, run blocking, catching the ball, breaking tackles, stuff like that. At the end of the day, if you don’t feel like that you shouldn’t be in the league.

Manager Alex Cora said Betts would take some swings Saturday and see how he’s feeling, then the club will decide when it’s time to activate him. The Red Sox were missing Betts, who is hitting .359 with 17 home runs and 37 RBI, as well as designated hitter J.D. Martinez (.314, 20 home runs, 52 RBI) while getting shut out for the second time this season.

White Sox: OF Adam Engel (hamstring) was out of lineup for the second straight day. … RF Avisail Garcia (hamstring) will begin a rehab assignment next week with Triple-A Charlotte.

Red Sox: Martinez was out of the lineup after getting pulled after the seventh inning Thursday because of back tightness. Cora said Martinez was getting a night off after a busy stretch in the schedule. … Optioned LHP Jalen Beeks, who made his major-league debut Thursday in a loss to Detroit, to Triple-A Pawtucket and recalled RHP Justin Haley.

Report: Julian Edelman tested positive for unrecognizable substance

eagles_100Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman has acknowledged he is facing a four-game suspension under the NFL’s policy on performance-enhancing substances, but he also said he doesn’t know what happened. It appears the league’s drug testing experts aren’t completely sure what happened either.

According to Albert Breer of SI.com, Edelman’s result was triggered by a substance that wasn’t immediately recognizable, and the drug testers are still analyzing it.

Trailing 2-1 most of the night, the Cubs scored six times over the last four innings against the Brewers’ formidable bullpen. They won their seventh straight over Milwaukee.

It would be nice to get (the offense) rolling, whether it’s earlier in the game with runners in scoring position … take some heat off the bullpen and not have to play extra innings, Maddon said.

Cubs relievers tossed five scoreless innings, with Randy Rosario (3-0) retiring all six batters he faced for the win.

They do all the little things well. They don’t make mistakes, Brewers outfielder Ryan Braun said. We still have to get better at some of those things I think to consistently play as good of baseball as they do.

Lawson seems to be getting the message about doing things differently after missing 11 regular season games and last year’s playoff loss because of injury. His comments about his job being on the line came while he was also discussing offseason weight loss designed to keep him on the field in what’s shaping up as a crucial season in his young career.

Mize walked three batters twice as a freshman in 2016 but hadn’t walked more than two batters in 31 starts until Saturday. He said he didn’t know why his control was off against the Gators, who are now one victory away from their fourth consecutive trip to the College World Series.

If I could put my finger on it, I probably would have figured it out, he said. But I don’t know. I just kept walking guys. I kept getting behind the count, so I don’t know. We’ll go back and watch some video. I’ll try to figure it out, but midgame there wasn’t anything that I noticed, or else I would have figured it out and changed it.
