Jack Conklin showing patience in his rehab

Titans right tackle Jack Conklin continues to rehab his left knee after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament during the playoff loss to the Patriots. Conklin said he has had no setbacks.

I want to start back up where I left off, and be even better, Conklin said, via Jim Wyatt of the team website. With ACLs, 10 years ago, people would have been real worried. The way science has gone now, I think 65 guys tore their ACL last year, and it is a long process to recover, but it has become such an easy procedure that it is something people can come back from, and come back even better.

Conklin, 23, likely won’t be ready for the start of training camp based on a typical ACL rehab prognosis. Titans coach Mike Vrabel recently hinted the Titans will place Conklin on the team’s physically unable to perform list before the first practice July 26.

Brad Johnson, Vikings quarterback: I was in Destin, Fla., hanging out with Mark Richt, who was at Florida State, and we were also with Danny Kanell. As soon as we drafted him, Danny and Mark went nuts. They said Brad, you’ve never seen a guy like this. You cannot throw the ball far enough. You cannot overthrow him.

I was looking forward to seeing how producers put together a reel for a guy who played three games and scored 30 points in college. I found this incredible clip of him scoring 52 points in a high school game, regularly hitting three pointers with two guys in his face. Then there’s the time he dropped 47 points in Jamal Crawford’s Pro Am League—not sure about the competition there—I think I saw my accountant guarding Porter. The good folks at DraftExpress were able to cobble together a collection of McDonald’s All-American Game, Team USA and Missouri highlights to represent Porter well enough. Yeah, he missed a ton of shots in two games after he came back from the injury at Missouri, but none of them found their way onto YouTube.

If you had never seen Trae Young play and just happened upon this clip, you’d probably saw the following: 1) He’s amazing. 2) How come he’s allowed to shoot from that deep? Must be the Curry effect. 3) Is he big enough to play in the NBA? Guess what, the ability to play professional-level defense has no bearing on the quality of a YouTube clip, so we’re not worried.

Johnson’s Week 2 injury—a broken foot—opened the door for Randall Cunningham.

Cris Carter: He became a typical prototype pocket passer after being a scrambler, a very athletic quarterback. I thought that was important, the overall growth. You just don’t see a whole lot of people who can do it, and he was able to do it. That was very fulfilling to see that.

Denny felt a sense of loyalty to Brad, but you just couldn’t pull Randall. [Reporters asked about a quarterback controversy] but, come on, it was Dak Prescott and Tony Romo. The writing was on the wall. Denny strung it out, saying Brad is the starter but Randall is going to play. We were like Umm … being the starter doesn’t matter if someone else is playing. He hid behind that for a few weeks, and then it just became obvious. You couldn’t take the highest-scoring team in the league and interject a quarterback change. Brad had to suck it up.

Fordham, located in the Bronx, played an important role in this staff’s takeover in Starkville. Moorhead turned his alma mater into an FCS playoffs regular starting in 2013, his second season at the school. In 2016, he joined James Franklin’s staff at Penn State, where his big-play offense helped the Nittany Lions to consecutive 11-win seasons. Breiner was Moorhead’s offensive coordinator at Fordham, took over as head coach when Moorhead left for State College and was one of Moorhead’s first hires in Starkville.

Coaches claim Fitzgerald is a perfect fit for this offense, standing up well to the three questions Moorhead asks of his quarterbacks: Can he beat you with his brains, beat you with his arms and beat you with his legs?

I think he can, Moorhead says, comparing Fitzgerald’s drive to his two most successful starting quarterbacks: Penn State’s Trace McSorley and former Fordham QB Michael Nebrich. Fitzgerald has about five inches and 30 pounds on both of them. It’s an interesting combination, Moorhead says, of having that fiery demeanor and competitiveness like those two guys but being a little bigger, faster and having a bigger arm.

Sam Darnold: He’s got time

With McCown’s lead and Bridgewater’s positive trajectory, there’s no reason for the Jets to rush Darnold into action. But he can make it difficult for the team to play the patience game.

In ESPN The Magazine’s MLB Preview issue, Sam Miller reveals how one ace reliever in Cleveland will, once and for all, allow us to move past one of baseball’s most persistent wastes.

Cleveland’s collapse-by-committee is an extreme example, but this sort of thing is happening constantly. From one year to the next, a team’s bullpen performance fluctuates so much that some years there appears to be no carryover at all. When a team does make big moves, the results often seem almost random: The Rockies spent nine figures building a super bullpen last winter, but their bullpen’s Win Probability Added has actually plummeted, from third in the league last year to 16th this year. Or the reverse: The A’s sold off their two best relievers at last year’s trade deadline, yet their atrocious 2017 bullpen has morphed into baseball’s third best this season.

Hopkins has had a tremendous career so far, making the Pro Bowl twice (2015, 2017) and leading the NFL in receiving touchdowns last season (15) despite only playing 13 games.

Johnson continued heaping praise, noting the importance of Deshaun Watson’s arrival.

Chicago signed Aaron Lynch, who played for Fangio in San Francisco, to tap into the pass-rush potential he showed early in his career, but the Bears might not be able to count on him as a solid starter opposite Floyd. Sam Acho tried to hold up in a regular role last season, but he was exposed several times. He’s better suited to be a backup going into his age-30 season. If things are looking bad outside, the Bears at some point need to consider moving Smith and sticking with Kwiatkoski inside.

Chicago was a decent pass-rushing team last season, and if Smith and Floyd collaborate as lead Dawgs, the team can be elite in that regard.

In a division where Green Bay, Minnesota and Detroit have major passing firepower, Chicago’s success will be measured most by sacks and takeaways. The offense’s conservative ways with Fox did not make for good complementary football. Nagy’s creative work with Trubisky and his weapons will in turn put the defense in more positions to succeed.

Adrian Wojnarowski details Paul George’s deal with the Thunder and how the All-Star can opt out after Year 3 to cash in long term.

With James’ reps and the Sixers meeting on Sunday, according to a report by ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, let’s take a look.

Whether the 76ers can sign LeBron this summer or not, they’re set up to contend in the East for years as a product of Sam Hinkie’s rebuilding process. Alongside Embiid and Simmons, the 76ers started 24-year-old Dario Saric and 27-year-old Robert Covington, both of whom will be part of the team’s core, barring a trade. Saric still has two years left on his team-friendly rookie contract, and Covington signed a four-year extension last fall that will pay him a reasonable $47 million after a renegotiation bumped up his 2017-18 salary.

From there, Rivers might get moved to third by a Willie Randolph bunt and then driven in on a Thurman Munson sacrifice fly or ground ball to the right side.

Sevy, your stuff is so good. Tell them. Tell them. And prove to yourself that [the struggles] aren’t you, and things will fall into place for you,’ Guidry said. Now look, it’s not because of me he’s become the guy. He’s worked hard, and now you see how good that kid is.Are the Sixers the best destination for LeBron James?

The focus now returns to the second line on the wing, with Rick Nash having announced that he’s unsure about playing in 2018-19. The trade market is full of options.

When Ryan McDonagh signed a seven-year extension for $6.75 million (starting in 2019-20), it signaled that the Lightning were likely out of the Tavares derby. Acquiring Tavares would have likely meant center Tyler Johnson ($5 million through 2024) and winger Ryan Callahan ($5.8 million through 2020) would have to be moved out to accommodate the hit.

Instead, they’ll likely remain, and the focus turns to fleshing out the blue line next year — with McDonagh, Victor Hedman and Mikhail Sergachev inked — and dedicating funds to winger Nikita Kucherov, who will be a restricted free agent next summer.

Rodgers wound up throwing for three touchdowns in the NFC Championship, but it was all for naught as his team fell behind 31-0 in Georgia.

All in all, the Falcons would hold a 65-24 advantage through the course of six quarters in the two biggest games of their 2016 season. And then football was canceled in the American South, never to be spoken of again (except in New Orleans, where March 28 is a holiday).

Rodgers returned to MVP-candidate form last fall in Green Bay’s 4-1 start, pulling together a 13:3 TD:INT ratio while pushing his team to the top of the NFC North. Then Anthony Barr crushed his collarbone into dust, and the Packers fell into a 3-8 spiral where:

But if the past is any indication, we can expect another postseason where the Patriots get upended by a team they’d beaten by 42 weeks earlier, or a Packers’ season derailed when two of the disks in Rodgers’ back spontaneously ignite. Somehow, someway, we are all unworthy of seeing Brady vs. Rodgers in the playoffs. Just accept that it’ll never happen.

Last month NFL owners approved a policy that they thought was a sop to the president, a rule that would punish players and teams for not standing while giving teams the option of staying the locker room during the anthem.

It looked like the league got the president off its back, too. President Donald Trump said the owners did the right thing following the decision. But the only thing more reliable than the NFL tripping over itself is this president contradicting himself.

The president was bothered when he didn’t get the chance to make himself look good by having his picture taken with Tom Brady, who didn’t attend the Patriots’ White House visit last year. When the White House learned that only a handful of Eagles players planned to be there this year, they saw opportunity and disinvited them.

Instead, the president is throwing himself a party at the NFL’s expense. A gaggle of his supporters will be on hand Tuesday along with the United States Marine Corps Band and the U.S. Army Chorus, but nobody from the Super Bowl champs. (Fortunately, patriotic music doesn’t affect the debilitating bone spurs that kept the president from putting on a uniform himself.)

Kawhi Leonard trade rumors: Cavaliers among teams to call Spurs

However, according to ESPN, Leonard has actively made it difficult for the Spurs to contact him at this point and actually had someone else in the room with him when Popovich met with the star forward.

The Magic haven’t had any egregious misses on stars in the draft, but they did have a worst-case scenario in 200Vazquez has never played an NBA game thanks to not wanting to leave Spain. Granger, meanwhile, became an All-Star and 25 points per game scorer before injuries got in the way.

In 2010, Turner was the consensus at No. He was the National Player of the Year with a well-rounded game that we look back on now to remind us that big, athletic, strong and polished college players tend to beat up on young opponents. Cousins ranks among the very best centers in the NBA.

The 1969 NBA Draft can be summed up as Lew Alcindor and everyone else. But Dandridge, who was drafted by the future Abdul-Jabbar’s Bucks, was the clear-cut No. The Suns had four chances to grab him and instead took five players — including twins Floyd and Lloyd Kerr — ahead of him. Three of those guys (Williams and the Kerrs) didn’t even play in the NBA.

We’re undefeated in July, Showalter said with a grin. Sometimes, you have to laugh to keep from crying, right? We have good people. It just hasn’t happened for us, but we have half the season left. That’s the approach we’re taking.

Kole Calhoun homered and Albert Pujols drove in a run for the Angels, who were seeking the first season sweep of Baltimore in franchise history. They settled for going 5-1, their fewest losses against the Orioles in one year.

LA reliever Eduardo Parades has allowed five HRs in 16 1/3 innings. … Gausman did not allow a walk for the fifth time this season. … Wilkerson recorded his first career double, but Showalter said the rookie left with an apparent oblique injury. … Angels star Mike Trout did not reach base for only the 12th time in 85 games this year.

Angels: DH/RHP Shohei Ohtani (elbow) was scheduled to take live batting practice in California. Asked if the two-way star could be activated for this week’s series against Seattle, Scioscia replied, Let’s get by today, see how he does. … RHP Garrett Richards (hamstring) could be ready to come off the DL on Wednesday to start against Seattle.

Confused yet? Like, you follow the logic, but then it gets a bit fuzzy? Get used to it. Because the 2018 fantasy football season is officially underway. Hello, old friend, and welcome back. Put your feet up and relax. Can I get you a smoothie?

Mike Golic is impressed with Saquon Barkley’s decision to not touch his Giants salary and live off his endorsement money.

New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley bought his parents a new house and didn’t need his first contract to make it happen.

That is where some of that fresh endorsement money from Nike, Pepsi and Panini America is headed. Barkley doesn’t plan to use his football earnings on any lavish purchases, such as the home he recently bought for his family in Whitehall, Pennsylvania.

Barkley hasn’t even signed his rookie contract with the Giants, who made him the No. 2 overall pick in this year’s draft.

That’s the goal, Barkley said. Not to touch it.

Arizona’s real trouble came in San Francisco’s four-run third, which included five singles. One of them, a dribbler up the middle by Pablo Sandoval, drove in two runs. Crawford walked with the bases loaded to bring in another run.

With right-handers Johnny Cueto and Jeff Samardzija due back from the disabled list soon, there might not be room for Rodriguez and/or Suarez in the rotation.

We want our guys back but at the same time when they’re throwing like this it does give you the luxury of making sure your guys are ready, Bochy said. Depth is going to be so important. We’re at the halfway point. You never know what can happen and it’s been great the way Suarez and Rodriguez have come up here and handled themselves.

Giants: Cueto (right elbow sprain) threw four scoreless innings Friday night in his second rehab appearance for Triple-A Sacramento. He allowed four hits, struck out six and walked one.

Uber driver’s lawyer says Ronald Darby no longer recalled ride in question

It turns out Eagles cornerback Ronald Darby was an unreliable witness because he wasn’t there when his former Florida State teammate, Jameis Winston, groped an Uber driver in March 2016.

The attorney for the former Uber driver confirmed a report from last week that Darby had not stayed with Winston the entire night in question.

The third man who spent time with Winston and Darby that night reportedly was Brandon Banks, a former Vanderbilt football player now in prison for rape.

There are a lot of reasons for that, starting with the basic facts of the Buccaneers’ schedule: The Bucs play on Monday night in Week Three, which means that after Winston starts his suspension at the conclusion of the preseason, he can’t return to the team until Tuesday, September 25. So the Bucs will be on a short work week heading into their Week Four game at Chicago on Sunday, September 30. Would the Bucs want to throw Winston in on a short work week, after three weeks off?

After that game against the Bears, the Buccaneers are on their bye week. So it might make more sense for them to play Fitzpatrick in Week Four, then give Winston time to get ready during the Week Five bye before he returns to the starting lineup in Week Six.

Of course, that assumes that Winston is going to return to the starting lineup at all. What if Fitzpatrick plays well and has the Buccaneers’ offense humming? Would the Bucs stick with the hot hand?

Yankees not ruling out Clint Frazier forcing them to keep him on roster

Clint Frazier arrived at Yankee Stadium for Thursday’s game telling himself the same thing as the day before… and so on:

Do something to stand out.

Brady doesn’t know how 2018 will play out and he doesn’t know how he’ll feel after. We could very well be reading Brady Instagram comments for another five offseasons. Welcome to June.

Not existentially, or wondering why his GPS seems broken, but as a person?

This just doesn’t seem like the same Goodell, who was selected in August 2006 to succeed Paul Tagliabue.

The Goodell I knew when he first took over would not have disappeared in the wake of Trump’s attacks on the league. He would have told the president to go kick rocks. If any owner tried to stop him from fighting back, he would have told that owner to kick rocks, too.

Now? Goodell is hiding.

It’s not really smart to suggest that anyone other than Brady himself knows when he’s going to walk away, and it’s not really smart to suggest Brady even knows right now what he wants to do following this year. The year to year idea floated by lots of older quarterbacks can sound a little absurd at times, but ultimately it makes sense in this context.

He used to be feared and unintimidated by anyone or any situation. He was tough, a bulldog.

In 2007, he suspended Wade Wilson, then the quarterbacks coach of the Cowboys, for five games and fined him $100,000 for purchasing human growth hormone, which Wilson said was for diabetes. He hit players like Ben Roethlisberger and Pacman Jones hard with suspensions. He policed on-field conduct more than previous NFL commissioners. He took a first-round pick from the Patriots for Spygate.

Leading off and playing center for the first time as a big leaguer, Frazier started the Yankees’ first off with an opposite-field single and it led to a four-run inning that was the difference in the game.
